[날씨] Jeju Island, 500mm water bomb, typhoon-like gusts…the metropolitan area is also on alert overnight

[앵커]

Today, Children’s Day, rainstorms accompanied by gusts of wind and lightning are expected.

Water bombs approaching 500 mm have already fallen on Jeju Island, and heavy rain of up to 100 mm or more was predicted overnight in inland areas, including Seoul.

In addition to outdoor activities during the holidays, it is necessary to prepare for aircraft and passenger flight cancellations and safety accidents.

We connect with reporters to find out more about the situation. Reporter Jeong Hye-yoon!

It’s unusual to see heavy rain and rain clouds like midsummer on Children’s Day in May. How strong is the rain?

[기자]

Yes, the rain this time is falling like midsummer, not May. It’s very similar to last year’s Children’s Day.

Looking at the amount of rain alone, the mountainous areas of Jeju Island are already exceeding 500mm today alone, so more caution is needed than last year.

First, let’s take a look at the current heavy rain situation in Jeju Island using YTN’s disaster reporting system, Idas.

The screen you are looking at right now is near the 1100 road in the mountains of Jeju. This is a place where a heavy rain warning and a strong wind warning were issued at the same time, and you can see that the wind is strong enough to shake the CCTV.

This area is experiencing intense summer-like rain, with heavy rain falling from 30 to 50 mm per hour.

Occasionally you can see the rain blowing like a tornado on the road due to strong winds. Safety precautions are required.

Next is the coast near Sanbangsan Mountain in Jeju.

There is a strong storm in the storm warning.

Currently, waves are high near Jeju Island and along the southern coast, causing repeated cancellations and delays in flights and ferries.

Due to strong winds, high waves at sea are expected to continue for some time. For the time being, you will need to prepare in advance and check for flight cancellations.

A strong wind warning has been expanded not only to Jeju Island, but also to the west coast of Honam and South Chungcheong Province, and following a heavy rain warning, a landslide warning has also been expanded to the Jeollanam-do coast. Please pay special attention to safety accidents as well as checking the surrounding area.

It seems like there is a lot of rain. How much is it raining?

[기자]

More than 500 meters of water bombs have already been rained down on the mountainous areas of Jeju Island today alone.

This is because midsummer-like heavy rain of more than 50 mm per hour is concentrated.

Caution is needed in this area as the valley water may suddenly rise and isolated accidents or damage from rain, such as in the summer, may occur.

In addition, heavy rain of up to 100 mm fell on the southern coast of Jeollanam-do, including Jangheung.

In the afternoon, the center of low pressure passes over North Korea, and heavy rain of up to 100 mm or more is expected to fall in the central region, including the metropolitan area.

In addition, as strong rain of more than 20 mm per hour accompanied by gusty winds is concentrated, a heavy rain warning will be issued in some places in northern Gyeonggi, northern Gangwon, and the west coast of South Chungcheong Province late this afternoon or overnight.

In particular, the Korea Meteorological Administration said that heavy rain will fall in North Korea, northern Gyeonggi, and northern Gangwon, and that river water levels near the Imjin River and Hantan River are likely to rise and flow speeds may increase, and asked people to be especially careful to avoid safety accidents.

Heavy rain this Children’s Day is expected to continue until Tuesday after the Golden Holiday.
