Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, has decided not to run for president on the 29th.
Local media, including NHK, reported on the 3rd that Prime Minister Suga announced at the interim executive meeting of the LDP held on the same day that he would not run for president.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Suga is expected to resign at the end of his term as governor at the end of this month.
Earlier, the recent sharp drop in Prime Minister Suga’s approval rating made it clear that he was leaving the garden. For example, Takuya Hirai, who is currently serving in the Suga cabinet, announced on the 1st that he would support Suga’s competitor, Fumio Kishida, former Chairman Jeongjo. Accordingly, at this point, Kishida, who announced his candidacy on the 26th of last month, is highly likely to become prime minister. However, it is known that former secretary-general Shigeru Ishiba and others are contemplating whether to run for office or not, so there is a possibility that the number of candidates will increase.
