(Seoul = Yonhap News) On the morning of the 22nd, the grieving families of the victims of the Itaewon disaster held the ‘Lawyers for a Democratic Society (Minbyun) 10/29 Itaewon Disaster Truth Investigation and Legal Assistance Task Force’ (TF) in the conference room on the 1st basement floor the Standard Building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, held a press conference and demanded measures to prevent recurrence and punishment for those responsible.
This is the first time in 24 days that family members of the victims have held an official press conference together.
The victim’s father, Lee Sang-eun, cried, saying, “After graduating from college, I prepared hard and passed the United States Certified Public Accountant (exam). I don’t know how much I cried when I heard your lively voice ‘to record on my mobile phone crying, ‘Dad, I passed.'” .
She said goodbye, “Mom and dad say you can only go to a good place if you let them go, so I’m going to let them go. Goodbye, girl.”
The victim’s mother, Kim In-dong, said, “The hardest thing about sending my son away is how frustrating it is that the people leading the country don’t admit their mistakes and say, ‘It’s not wrong.'”
The father who lost his daughter Song Eun-ji said, “The October 29 Itaewon disaster was an indirect murder caused by a complete insensitivity to safety from top to bottom. Please understand the hearts of the bereaved families and help ensure that deaths our precious children are not in vain.” he appealed.
Since the formation of the TF, Minbyun has received the request of the bereaved families of 34 victims and has been representing them legally.
The demands are ▲ a sincere apology ▲ strict and thorough accountability without sanctuary ▲ truth and accountability that guarantees the participation of victims ▲ active support such as guaranteed communication and humanitarian measures for the victims of the disaster ▲ active measures for complete memory and commemoration of the victims ▲ Site statement and preparation of specific countermeasures to prevent secondary damage.
