(Seoul = Yonhap News) Russia has begun a scorched earth operation by using air strikes and shelling to capture the fiercely defended Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military said on the 10th (local time).

The commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Shirsky, said the situation in Bahmut “is still difficult but manageable,” according to Reuters.

“The enemy has changed to so-called scorched earth tactics, like in Syria,” he said.

Commander Shirsky also said that as the forces of the private mercenary company Wagner Group, which had been leading the attack on Bahmut, were about to end, Russia was supporting the attack by sending special forces and air troops.

Ukrainian military expert Ole Zdanou said that Russia had taken control of the center of Bakhmut and was now focusing its offensive on the railway station.

“There is heavy fighting taking place in the center of the city, and the enemy is gradually moving towards the western outskirts,” he explained.

The UK Ministry of Defense has analyzed that over the past week Russia has been increasing its armed campaign towards Marinka, another eastern city.
