(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = Russia and Ukraine have agreed to continue the fifth round of peace negotiations in Turkey.

However, the two sides are in conflict with the date of the start of the negotiations.

According to Reuters on the 27th (local time), David Harahamiya, leader of the ruling party, a member of the Ukrainian negotiating delegation, said on social media that “face-to-face negotiations will be held in Turkey from the 28th to the 30th.”

According to the TAS news agency, President Vladimir Medinsky, who leads the Russian side’s negotiating delegation, also said on social media that “offline talks with the Ukrainian delegation will be held on the 29th and 30th.”

“There was a videoconference with the Ukrainian side today,” Medinsky said.

Tas, citing sources at the meeting, said the two sides discussed many things over video.

A source from the Russian side said, “We have fully discussed in an online format, and now is the time to meet offline.”

Turkey’s presidential office later issued a statement saying, “Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone today, and the two leaders agreed that the Russian-Ukrainian negotiators would hold talks in Istanbul.”

The Turkish presidential office did not disclose a specific start date, but Ibrahim Karn, a spokesman for the Turkish presidential office, said in an interview with CNN in the US that “the talks will begin on Tuesday (29th).”

The Russian and Ukrainian delegations held three face-to-face meetings on the 28th of last month and the 3rd and 7th of this month, and from the 14th, the fourth meeting was held in the form of videoconference.

If the two sides hold face-to-face talks in Turkey on the 28th or 29th, this will be the fifth round of talks.

The delegations of the two countries reached an agreement on the establishment of a humanitarian channel through evacuation of civilians through negotiations, and announced that they had narrowed their differences in the withdrawal of Ukraine’s attempt to join NATO.

However, they have not been able to narrow their differences of opinion on territorial issues, such as the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed by force in 2014, and the recognition of independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic of Ukraine established by pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video interview with a Russian journalist on the same day that Ukraine could discuss issues such as neutralizing Ukraine, its status as a non-nuclear state, security guarantees, and allowing the use of Russian language in Ukraine.

He also expressed his desire to compromise with Russia on the issue of the Donbas region occupied by pro-Russian separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

However, he made it clear that he could not accept Russia’s demand for demilitarization, saying, “If we insist on demilitarizing, we will not negotiate.”

The two sides held their first high-level ministerial meeting since the start of the war in Antalya, a resort town in southern Turkey on the 10th.

At the time, the meeting was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Kuleva, but both sides returned empty-handed after repeating their previous positions.

Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

It also maintains friendly relations with Ukraine by selling Turkish-made unmanned attack aircraft.
