Sit down on the demolished statue and take a commemorative photo
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jong-seok Yoon = Reuters reported on the 26th (local time) that the statue, which was installed during the Soviet period and symbolized friendly relations with Russia, was removed from Kiiu, the capital of Ukraine.
The statue shows Ukrainian and Russian workers standing on a pedestal and holding the ‘Soviet Order of Friendship’ together.
This statue was installed in a space created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Soviet Union in 1982.
“This statue has symbolized friendship between Ukraine and Russia,” said Kiiu Mayor Vitali Klicichko.
Thousands of people have been killed or injured since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, cities and towns have been left in ruins, and more than five million have been forced to cross the border and flee to refuge.
But Russia claims the war is a ‘special operation’ to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists.
Kiiwu citizens who watched the statue being demolished that evening cheered and shouted slogans such as “Glory to Ukraine, Glory to the heroes”.
Some citizens even took a commemorative photo sitting on the head of the statue that had been cut off.
