(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he wants to compromise with Russia over the Donbass issue, which has been occupied by pro-Russian separatist rebels.

According to Reuters/AFP news agency, President Zelensky said this in a video interview conducted in Russian with a Russian journalist on the 27th (local time).

However, the details of the compromise related to the Donbass issue were not mentioned.

This is a statement that can be interpreted as a step back from the previous position that Russia could not make concessions on territorial issues such as Crimea and Donbas, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Zelensky said Ukraine’s neutral status could also be discussed in negotiations with Russia.

However, he emphasized that “the neutralization of Ukraine must be guaranteed by a third party and must be decided through a referendum.”

“We are prepared to discuss security guarantees, neutralization and the status of a non-nuclear state,” he added. “This is the most important point in negotiations.”

“The issue of allowing the use of Russian language in Ukraine will also be discussed in negotiations,” he said.

However, he made it clear that he could not accept the demilitarization of Ukraine that Russia was demanding, saying, “If we persist in demilitarizing, we will not negotiate.”

“Russia needs to know the truth,” Zelensky told a Russian journalist and criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for delaying negotiations and prolonging the conflict.

“We have to come to an agreement with the President of the Russian Federation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Roskomnadzor, a Russian media regulator, said on the same day that it had launched an investigation into the local media that interviewed President Zelensky.

In a statement, Roskomnadzor warned that “a number of Russian media have interviewed President Zelensky” and that “we need to refrain from reporting this interview.”

The Russian Prosecutor’s Office also said that a legal opinion on the legality of disclosing the interview would come out.

In a speech on the 27th, President Zelensky also accused the West of reluctance to provide arms.

“The fighting spirit, courage and determination they have shown is astonishing,” he said in a video address, referring to Mariupol’s perseverance under the siege of Russia. I would have only had 1% of the courage Upol showed me.”

Mariupol has been virtually besieged and devastated by Russian bombings since the beginning of this month. In Russia, Mariupol is considered a key point connecting Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, and Donbas, a pro-Russian region in Ukraine.

“All entrances to and from Mariupolo have been blocked, and the port is covered with mines,” Zelensky said.

He criticized Russia for violating freedom of the press by banning the reporting of interviews.
