10th Anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster… Memorial events across the country

Today marks 10 years since the Sewol Ferry disaster occurred.

There will be places to commemorate the 304 people who died in the disaster.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, events to commemorate the victims are held across the country.

First, a boat memorial ceremony will be held in the waters near Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, where the disaster occurred.

90 people, including families of the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, plan to take a boat from Mokpo Port to the area where the disaster occurred and pay a moment of silence and lay flowers while calling out the names of the 250 student victims one by one.

Afterwards, the bereaved families plan to move to Mokpo New Port, where the Sewol Ferry hull is located, at 2:30 p.m. and hold a memorial cultural festival together with local civic groups.

The bereaved families of the October 29 Itaewon disaster will also attend this event.

At 3 p.m., a ‘Sewol Ferry Disaster 10th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony’ will be held at Hwarang Resort in Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, where Danwon High School is located.

The bereaved family and general mourners will visit, and politicians will also attend.

In addition, memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Sewol Ferry Victims Memorial Hall installed in Incheon Family Park and the Daejeon National Cemetery for fallen public officials, and Gyeonggi Province plans to sound a siren in remembrance in the area of ​​Danwon-gu Office in Ansan City for one minute starting at 4:16 a.m. .

The National Human Rights Commission today expressed its condolences to the bereaved families through a statement by Chairman Song Doo-hwan, while also emphasizing that the government and the National Assembly should work together to fundamentally improve the system to prevent similar disasters from recurring on the 10th anniversary of the disaster.
