Elle Macpherson Shares Modeling Career Advice, Reflects on Early Jobs
Updated June 03, 2025
Supermodel Elle Macpherson recently appeared on El Hormiguero to discuss her career and offer advice to aspiring models. Macpherson, in Spain for Elle magazine’s 80th-anniversary celebration where she will receive a career award, shared insights into her journey and the importance of embracing individuality in the fashion world.
Macpherson initially aspired to study law, a path she considered more conventional. However, the allure of economic independence and travel led her to pursue modeling. “I wanted to be economically independent and travel,” Macpherson said, recalling the moment an agency invited her to the United States. ”I felt a jump in my heart and decided to take that step.”
Before her successful modeling career, Elle Macpherson held a job as a pharmacist at age 14, earning $12 a week. This early experience instilled in her a sense of responsibility and work ethic that she carried throughout her career.
During the interview, Macpherson recounted facing rejection early in her career for not fitting the typical blonde, blue-eyed beauty standard prevalent at the time. This experience taught her the importance of self-acceptance. “I wasn’t the typical girl and wanted to look like the rest untill I realized that what I had to do was be myself, because that is what distinguished me from others,” Macpherson said.
“I recommend that they themselves, that is the lovely,” Macpherson said, offering encouragement to those pursuing their dreams.
What’s next
Macpherson plans to continue advocating for self-acceptance and individuality within the fashion industry, hoping to inspire future generations of models to embrace their unique qualities.
