16 shots came and went, but ‘0 effective shots’ is a record in the 21st century… why?

The Korean national football team played a fierce match against Uruguay, but it was recorded that there were no ‘shots on target’ from either side. It is a record of the ‘first 0 game on target in the 21st century’.

South Korea drew 0-0 in the first leg of the Qatar 2022 World Cup Group H group stage against Uruguay held at the Al Rayyan City of Education Stadium in Qatar on the 24th.

According to the official count of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Korea kicked 6 shots and Uruguay kicked 10 shots. However, none of the 16 shots taken by both teams were recorded as shots on target. The British media ‘Bible of Sport’ said this was the first time in the history of a World Cup match in the 21st century.

This game was more intense than ever, so this result may come as a surprise.

Effective shooting is called ‘shots on target’ in English. A shot that flies into the basket. In other words, it’s a shot that leads to a goal if the goalkeeper doesn’t block it. Whether the shot is strong or weak, if it goes inside the basket, it is a valid shot.

On the other hand, even if it hits the goal post and bounces off the goal post, or narrowly escapes the post, it is not an effective shot.

Thus, Diego Godin’s Uruguayan header hit the left post in the 43rd minute of the first half and Valverde’s mid-range shot that hit the post in the 44th minute of the second half was not recorded as shots on target.
