Squid Spill Blankets Narragansett Intersection
A routine delivery took a bizarre turn on August 19, 2026, when a tractor-trailer accident spilled 20 tons of slimy squid onto a busy intersection in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Local authorities quickly dubbed the foul-smelling mess the Squidpocalypse of ’26.
According to Narragansett Police Capt. Ryan Prest, the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. The truck, which was headed to an out-of-town processing facility, dislodged and flipped on its side while making a turn.
Intense Heat Amplifies the Odor
The mishap left the roadway covered in mountains of seafood as temperatures climbed above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer sun quickly intensified the stench.
Narragansett resident and local fisherman Richard Stevens told WJAR that the scent was unmistakable and rapidly became overpowering.
Driver Emerges Uninjured From the Rollover
Despite the dramatic scene and the slippery cargo, Capt. Prest confirmed that neither the driver nor a passenger sustained injuries in the rollover.

All-Day Cleanup Closes Roads
Heavy equipment and a dump truck were brought in to haul away the seafood during an operation that lasted nearly the entire day.
The intersection remained closed to traffic until 5:15 p.m. while crews cleared the road. The Narragansett Police Department later referenced the incident on social media, writing that the event put the phrase “slippery when wet” to shame.
