Earthquake Spares Southern Peru From Catastrophe
The major seismic event occurred at 13:00 local time, leaving at least three people injured and damaging approximately thirty public buildings and infrastructure networks, according to official reports.
The epicenter was located 35 kilometers north of Coracora in the province of Parinacochas, INDECI reported.
Subterranean Depth Prevents Widespread Devastation
Despite the high magnitude of the temblor, preliminary assessments confirmed no fatalities. According to reporting by the HuffPost, the considerable depth of the earthquake—calculated at 108 kilometers—helped absorb much of the energy before it reached the surface, preventing catastrophic devastation across the mountainous terrain.
The tremor was felt strongly across a dozen districts, reaching as far as Ica, Apurímac, Moquegua, and parts of the capital, Lima. The Peruvian Navy’s Hydrography and Navigation Directorate confirmed that the seismic activity did not generate any tsunami threat along the country’s coastline.
Minor Injuries and Infrastructure Strain in the Andes
According to INDECI statements cited by Infobae, the three injured individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to evacuate their homes and received emergency medical treatment at the Hospital de Apoyo de Coracora.
Damage to physical infrastructure was widespread across multiple southern provinces. The Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Sectorial (COES) of the Ministry of Education reported structural issues at nine educational institutions in Ayacucho and two in Apurímac, prompting authorities to implement preventive isolation of the affected areas to secure ongoing education.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health recorded impacts on ten health service facilities in Ayacucho and two in Cusco, alongside six additional establishments within the Ayacucho Health Network, bringing the total tally of affected public facilities to 29 according to Infobae. Despite these structural impacts, health authorities confirmed that emergency medical services remained operational.
Grid Failures Strike Amid Political Transition
The shaking disrupted regional power grids, triggering emergency protocols from the Ministry of Energy and Minas. Power outages affected thousands of users in Nazca province within the Ica department and users in the Puquio district of Ayacucho’s Lucanas province, according to INDECI.

The natural emergency unfolded during a period of political transition in Peru, occurring while Prime Minister Luis Galarreta and Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde were outlining the general policy of the newly inaugurated administration led by President Keiko Fujimori, as noted by HuffPost. Authorities continue monitoring the affected zones as local emergency operation centers coordinate recovery efforts.
