Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2024: Essential Information

Overview

The 98th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place in New York City. The event features large balloons, floats, and performances from various artists.

Balloons Inflation Preview

On the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, from 1 PM to 6 PM, spectators can watch the balloons inflate. This event occurs at the entrance area at 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue, near the American Museum of Natural History.

Best Viewing Spots

Macy’s recommends viewing the parade along:

  • 6th Avenue from West 59th to West 38th Streets
  • Central Park’s west side between West 75th and West 61st Streets (public access starts at 6 AM)

Restricted Viewing Areas

  • Start Point: West 77th Street and Central Park West
  • Turning Point: Columbus Circle
  • End Point: Macy’s Herald Square, including West 34th Street, Broadway to 7th Avenue

Transportation

Subway stations near the parade start include:

  • 1, 2, and 3 at 72nd Street
  • 1 at 79th Street
  • C at 81st Street
  • 1, C, A, and D at 59th St-Columbus Circle

Expect extra services on the S 42nd Street Shuttle and increased early morning service on the 1 line. Some entrances may close to manage crowds.

What to Avoid Bringing

Spectators should not bring:

  • Large bags
  • Umbrellas
  • Backpacks
  • Strollers

Weather Forecast

Expect rain and wind on Thanksgiving Day. Rain totals may reach half an inch to an inch. Wind speeds are forecasted to be around 5-10 mph, which is manageable for the balloon displays. Balloons can fly only if winds remain below 23 mph with gusts under 34 mph.
