GUMI, South ⁤Korea (AP) — The city of Gumi, located⁢ in​ Gyeongsangbuk-do province, is preparing to host the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, marking‍ the first time in 20 years the ⁢event has been held in South Korea at the basic local ⁤government level.

The⁣ five-day competition is⁣ scheduled to take place from ‍May⁢ 27 to ‌May 31 at the Gumi⁣ Citizens’ Stadium. Organizers anticipate more than 1,200 athletes from 45 Asian nations‌ will participate.

The organizing committee is led by Kim Jang-ho, Mayor of gumi, Yuk Hyun-pyo, Chairman of ⁣the Korean Federation of⁣ Athletics Federation, and Lee Chul-woo, Governor of​ Gyeongsangbuk-do.

According to officials,the asian Athletics ⁣Federation has been working to secure 500 million won through local ‍due diligence and a local competition support project.

In February, a D-100 Citizen Report Meeting was held to mark 100 days until the​ event. A final contest was held on the 21st,alongside national team selections.

During the championships, promotional ⁤centers for the 2025 APEC Summit, to be held in Gyeongju, and for Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) will be available to ‌provide cultural experiences for athletes and attendees.

The event will also feature food zones, including Asian and street‌ food vendors, corporate public relations centers, and a Ramen festival promotion center.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho emphasized the importance of ⁤the event,stating it is “the first in the basic ⁤local governments for the first time ⁢in Korea in 20 ‌years.”

Governor Lee Chul-woo said, “Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi City have been⁤ preparing for three years for the ‌Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, which will be held after 30 days, and we will‌ do our best to provide a safe and⁣ comfortable game environment ⁤for athletes and‍ to see engaging athletics for citizens.” ⁤He added, “I hope it‌ will be an important possibility to become a sports city.”
