Ben Griffin Leads Memorial Tournament After Remarkable Opening round

Ben Griffin continued his strong play, seizing the first-round lead at the Memorial Tournament with a 7-under 65. Griffin’s round at Muirfield Village put him two strokes ahead of collin Morikawa. Fresh off his first PGA Tour win at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Griffin navigated the challenging course with an aggressive strategy.
Despite two water balls, Griffin’s impressive performance beat the field average by nine strokes. He credited his aggressive approach and positive mindset for his success. ”It was an incredible day,” Griffin said, highlighting his birdie-filled round and enjoyment playing with Shane Lowry.
After encountering setbacks on Nos. 11 and 12, Griffin surged ahead with four birdies in the last five holes. Max Homa,who shot a 68,and Shane Lowry,who posted a 69,also played well. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, began his tournament defense with a 70, trailing Griffin by five strokes.
Homa noted his comfort level with his game, saying, “My game feels about as good as it has in a very, very long time.” He added that a good start helped calm his nerves, contributing to his solid round.
Scheffler acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “I need to give myself some more looks.I felt like I was out of the fairway a bit too much today.” Despite hitting only six fairways, Scheffler remains within striking distance.
“Ther’s a lot of talk about the golf ball and the technology and how far it’s going.And whether or not you like it or not, for me, I have to take advantage of the possibility to hit it really far,” Griffin said regarding his increased ball speed.
Morikawa, a past winner at Muirfield Village, is in second place. He relied on familiar swing thoughts to shoot a 67, leading the field in strokes gained tee to green. He hit 12 of 14 fairways and gained nearly four strokes on approach.
“Honestly, I woke up today kind of not knowing how the swing was going to produce,” Morikawa said. “I spent a couple hours on the range after the pro-am yesterday and was just trying to find something.”
Several notable players face an uphill battle to make the cut, including justin Thomas, who struggled with a high score. Adam Scott,Cameron Young,and others also need strong second rounds to advance.
