OAKMONT, Pa. — Tyler Spaun grabbed the first-round lead at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, carding a 4-under 66. But with Oakmont’s notorious difficulty, several big names remain in contention.
Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, is lurking just two shots back after a 2-under 68. Koepka, who has struggled in recent majors, found his form with an eagle and two late birdies. Jon Rahm also had a strong start, posting a 1-under 69. Rahm, who has a history of starting well at the U.S. Open, cited improvements in his driving as a key factor.
several top players face a Friday battle to make the cut, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Rory McIlroy, all at least 3-over par. Other stars, including Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and Shane Lowry, have even steeper hills to climb.
James Nicholas, ranked No. 502 in the world, surprised many with a 1-under 69. Thriston Lawrence also delivered a strong showing at 3-under.
The top 60 and ties will make the cut, which is projected to be several strokes over par, given Oakmont’s challenging conditions.
“I thought I played pretty consistently, drove it really well,” Koepka said. “Iron play was pretty good. When I did miss it,I felt like I missed it in the correct spots… I’m really happy with the way I finished, and hopefully it leads into tomorrow.”
“I’m extremely happy,” rahm said. “I played some incredible golf to shoot 1-under, which we don’t usually say, right?”
What’s next
The second round will test players’ endurance and mental fortitude as they navigate Oakmont’s treacherous layout. Those who struggled on Thursday will need to rebound quickly to secure a spot for the weekend.
