Teams from across the United States competed in the 2026 Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, with the championship final held on June 14, 2026, according to NCAA.com. The University of North Carolina Tar Heels secured the title with a 6-3 victory over the Florida Gators, marking their first national championship since 2001. The game, played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, drew a crowd of 32,147 fans, according to tournament organizers.
The Tar Heels advanced to the finals after defeating the Oregon Ducks 5-2 in the semifinals on June 13, while the Gators topped the Oklahoma Sooners 4-1 in the other semifinal. North Carolina’s winning run in the championship came in the seventh inning, when senior shortstop Jake Smith hit a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-2. Florida’s lone run in the ninth inning was a solo home run by junior outfielder Michael Carter, who finished the tournament with four home runs.

North Carolina head coach Mike Leach, in his 12th season at the university, praised his team’s resilience. “This group never quit, even when the odds were against us,” Leach said in a postgame interview. “We played with heart, and it paid off.” The Tar Heels’ victory also marked the first time a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has won the national title since 2006. Florida, which has won the championship three times since 2001, will look to regroup for the 2027 season, according to NCAA.com.
The 2026 tournament featured 64 teams, with regional competitions held across 12 host sites from May 28 to June 11. The College World Series, which began in 1947, is the pinnacle of NCAA Division I baseball. This year’s event saw a record 1.2 million tickets sold, according to the NCAA, with 78% of games selling out. The organization reported that 82% of attendees were from Nebraska or adjacent states, with 15% traveling from outside the Midwest.
Several players from the 2026 championship game received individual awards. North Carolina’s pitcher Ryan Harris was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after posting a 2-0 record with a 1.89 earned run average (ERA). Florida’s Carter and Oregon’s pitcher Emily Zhang were recognized as All-Tournament Team members. The NCAA also announced that the 2027 College World Series will be held in Omaha from June 13 to June 25, 2027, with the same 64-team format.
The 2026 season highlighted the growing popularity of college baseball, with viewership of the championship game increasing by 12% compared to 2025, according to ESPN. The network reported an average of 4.1 million viewers for the final, up from 3.7 million the previous year. The NCAA attributed the growth to expanded streaming availability and partnerships with social media platforms, which saw 28 million total views of tournament highlights across platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels.
