2026 NFL Draft: Raiders’ Plans, Top Prospects & Scouting Insights

by David Thompson - Sports Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – The NFL combine is underway in Indianapolis this week, marking the next critical step in the evaluation process for the 2026 NFL draft, scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. Teams are leveraging the combine, along with all-star games like the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl and individual pro days, to thoroughly scout prospects.

The evaluation process extends beyond on-field performance. Teams are also utilizing the opportunity to interview players, conduct comprehensive medical evaluations, and gather crucial information to inform their draft decisions. Teams are also permitted to host up to 30 players at their facilities for further evaluation.

“The football aspect, that’s what resonates right now,” said New Orleans Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas, who coached the American team during the Senior Bowl in January. “We’re trying to confirm the things we see and then obviously you find out who the guys are that love this game and are doing all the little things to help their career along and help the organization achieve their goals.”

One NFC executive emphasized the importance of confirming pre-existing evaluations. “Most of the work that gets done after the season is usually an affirmation or confirmation of what you believe already,” he said.

Raiders’ Intentions at No. 1?

The biggest question surrounding the draft centers on the Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the No. 1 overall pick. According to polling of executives and scouts, the Raiders are widely expected to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Eight of those polled believe the Raiders will maintain the top pick and draft Mendoza. There was zero support for the idea of the Raiders trading the pick.

An AFC executive stated emphatically, “Never say never, but never,” echoing a sentiment often expressed by Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, regarding the Raiders potentially moving from the top spot.

Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner, has emerged as the clear frontrunner, drawing comparisons to recent successful quarterbacks drafted high, including Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels. His performance in his final collegiate season has solidified his position as the top quarterback prospect.

“The Raiders’ roster is bad, but Mendoza is the best passer in the draft and it’s not close,” an NFC executive said. “You can’t pass that up. He’s accurate to all levels of the field with a good arm, plus-size and good character.”

Evaluators also highlighted Mendoza’s demeanor and leadership qualities as potential assets for the Raiders. “That can be his superpower,” one NFC executive said. “… He’s really that focused, and I think guys will gravitate toward that.”

While the possibility of trading the pick for an established quarterback like Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson was briefly considered, it’s viewed as highly unlikely.

The Raiders finished last in the NFL in total offense last season, averaging just 245.3 yards per game. With nearly $88 million in salary cap space – second only to the Tennessee Titans – the Raiders are expected to aggressively address their offensive needs in free agency to support Mendoza.

Who is the Top Prospect Overall?

While Mendoza is the consensus top quarterback, the overall best prospect in the class, according to those polled, is Ohio State linebacker/edge rusher Arvell Reese, receiving five votes. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love received three votes, while Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and Mendoza each received one vote.

The prevalence of quarterbacks being selected No. 1 overall in recent drafts was acknowledged, but Reese’s versatility and potential impact on both the linebacker and edge rusher positions set him apart.

Players NFL Veterans are Excited About

Current NFL players also weighed in on which prospects they are most excited to see enter the league. Seattle Seahawks defensive end Leonard Williams highlighted Mendoza’s character and leadership qualities. “He just looks like a great, humble kid,” Williams said. “He just looks like he’s happy to be there, wherever he’s at. I think that type of attitude, combined with his athleticism and playmaking ability, he’s going to change a locker room wherever he goes.”

New England Patriots guard Mike Onwenu also expressed enthusiasm for Mendoza, citing his performance and demeanor. Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez mentioned Arizona State receiver Antonio Williams, noting a personal connection and his impressive college career.

Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori highlighted Ohio State cornerback Brandon Cisse and Clemson receiver Germie Bernard as players he’s been following closely. Patriots defensive tackle Jarran Reed expressed excitement about Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr.
