’24 deaths’ Osaka building 61-year-old ‘arsenal murder’ suspect “currently critical”

Osaka Police revealed the identity of the suspect on the 19th in connection with an arson murder case that occurred at a hospital on the fourth floor of an eight-story commercial building located in Shinji Sonezaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, Japan.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the suspect is Morio Tanimoto (谷本盛雄, 61), whose residence and occupation have not yet been revealed. Cardiopulmonary arrest means that the heart and breathing have stopped and is not completely dead.

The incident occurred on the 17th at around 10:20 am at the Nishi-Umeda Mind and Body Clinic. Twenty-seven men and women, including the patient, were taken to the hospital in cardiopulmonary arrest, and 24 of them died. One in three people who have been resuscitated is a suspect. The other two are women and are in critical condition. Another woman was rescued from the sixth floor and suffered minor injuries.

The police set up an investigation headquarters as an arson and murder case, believing that the suspect placed a paper bag containing flammable liquid near a heating appliance near the hospital reception desk and knocked it over, and the leaked liquid caught fire. Police also conducted autopsies on 19 of the 24 who died, and as a result, 7 of them revealed that the cause of death was carbon dioxide poisoning from inhaling smoke. The investigation into the cause of the other 12 deaths is ongoing, he said.
