’28 years Later’ Villain Draws Jimmy Savile Comparisons
Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” arrives in theaters with preview screenings tonight, generating buzz about its storyline and characters. early reviews suggest the film, shot partly with iPhones, stands out within the zombie genre for its compelling, albeit messy, tonal shifts.
As the first installment in a planned trilogy, “28 Years Later” features scenes designed to bridge the narratives between films. The ending, in particular, has sparked discussion due to the introduction of a controversial villain who will play a important role in the second movie.
The film marks the return of Cillian Murphy, whose character will have a major role in the third film. Though, the initial handover focuses on Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by jack O’Connell. The character’s appearance, complete with long blond hair and velour tracksuit, has led to comparisons with the late Jimmy Savile, a British media personality later revealed to be a prolific sex offender.
An attendee at the London premiere noted a palpable unease when the connection to Savile became apparent. O’Connell described his character as thrilling to portray, existing “in the darker pocket” compared to his previous roles.
Writer Alex Garland addressed the inspiration behind the character, noting a cultural tendency to selectively remember the past. He said the film reflects how “things that have been forgotten, things that have been cherry-picked and things have been misremembered” blend together to create a commentary on society.
Danny and I grew up in an era where everything was about looking forward in some respects, and currently, for the last 10 or 15 years, we’re in an era that is very much about looking back…What the film is preoccupied with on some level is the way when we look back, there is amnesia, and there is cherry picking. Also, there are things that are misremembered.
What’s next
While the script for the third film remains unwritten, Garland confirmed that a story, plan, and structure are in place to continue the “28 years Later” saga.
