As the weather warms up so quickly, you must have started turning on fans and air conditioners a lot.

In fact, electricity demand has been skyrocketing since this month.

In the midst of this, as the government decided to raise the electricity rate by 4.3% from next month, the burden on the electricity bill is likely to increase.

Gas prices are also expected to rise by 7% from July 1.

First, let’s take a look at reporter Park Jin-joon’s report.

◀ Report ▶

The government has decided to raise the electricity rate by 4.3%.

It was decided to raise the price by 5 won from 116 won to 121 won per kilowatt hour.

The average electricity consumption of a four-person household in Korea is 307 kilowatt hours.

On average, you pay 1,535 won more per month.

The electricity rate hike was foreshadowed.

In the past year, the prices of bituminous coal, liquefied natural gas, and international oil used to make electricity have all nearly doubled.

However, electricity rates rose only once in April, 6.3%.

KEPCO’s deficit recorded 5.9 trillion won last year, and has already recorded 7.8 trillion won in the first quarter of this year.

According to the current fuel cost indexing system, you can raise up to 3 won per quarter and 5 won per year, but the government changed the terms and conditions and raised it to 5 won all at once.

However, it seems difficult to solve KEPCO’s deficit problem with such an increase.

KEPCO said that in order to avoid the deficit due to the increase in fuel cost, it would need to raise 33.6 won, or 29%, per kilowatt hour.

“Actually, the appropriate level should be between 20% and 25%. To recover the cost, it has to go up by 50%.”

In fact, the rate of increase in electricity rates in other countries is much larger.

Compared to a year ago, Germany rose 43%, UK 33%, Spain 68%, France 24%, and Japan 12%.

In addition to electricity rates, gas rates will also increase by 7% from July 1.

Based on Seoul standards, each household will increase by an average of 2,200 won per month.
