5 American Fetish Products Made in Europe

5 American Fetish Products Made in Europe

April 5, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Tariffs Target Iconic U.S. Products Made Overseas

‍ American consumers bracing for price hikes on goods manufactured in china ‌and Vietnam due to tariffs ‍are now facing an unexpected ⁣twist: increased costs on some of their‌ favorite “American” products. These items, often perceived as quintessentially American, are actually manufactured in ⁢Europe and are now subject to a 20% import tax.

Ray-Ban Sunglasses: An Italian icon?

⁢ Few images are as all-American as Tom‌ Cruise sporting Ray-Ban sunglasses ‌in “Top Gun.” The ⁣brand, established in 1937 ‌with the Aviator model for ‌U.S. Air ‍Force pilots, gained further popularity with ⁢the 1952 Wayfarer, famously ‍worn by Ray Charles. Politicians from malcolm X to President Joe Biden have also favored the brand.

However, most Ray-Ban sunglasses are produced in a small Italian ‌village in the Dolomites.‍ Ray-Ban, along with oliver Peoples and Vogue Eyewear, ⁣is⁣ owned by EssilorLuxottica, a Franco-Italian eyewear ‌giant. In 2024, ‍North American sales for EssilorLuxottica reached ⁤nearly 12 billion euros. These sunglasses ‍will now be subject to the 20% ⁣tariff.

Starbucks Capsules Brewed in switzerland

With⁢ coffee prices already ⁢expected to rise due to tariffs on African countries, another jolt awaits U.S. consumers: Starbucks espresso capsules. Despite the Seattle-based ⁢company’s prominent green logo, ⁤these capsules are manufactured ‌in‍ three Nestlé factories in Switzerland. Swiss imports now face a 31% customs rate, higher than that of the ‍European Union.

These Starbucks capsules are essentially⁣ rebranded Nespresso capsules, of ‍which Nestlé sells over ⁢14 billion annually.Relocating production to the U.S.is unlikely, as the capsules primarily feature an American logo on ‌a Swiss-made ⁣product.

High-Tech Hospital Beds from the Czech republic

Medical⁤ beds, popularized by American ‌TV shows and patented by Indiana university in 1909, are also subject to ⁢these‍ tariffs.⁤ The Linet Group,⁤ a Czech Republic-based company, is a major supplier of these beds.
⁢

‍ ⁢According to Bloomberg, Linet Group‌ anticipates raising prices for‌ future contracts with American customers. This could exacerbate concerns about the already high cost of medical care in the U.S. Exports to the United⁤ States account for approximately 20% of the group’s annual turnover, totaling up to 370⁢ million euros.

American Girl dolls: Made in Germany

While most Barbie dolls are manufactured in Asia, Mattel’s American Girl dolls⁣ strive⁢ to project an image of American heritage. These dolls, depicting historical figures from the Wild⁢ West‍ to astronauts, are primarily manufactured ‌in Germany⁤ by Götz ‍PuppenManufaktur. This includes popular Disney-licensed models and historical dolls priced at over 100 euros.

‌Mattel has invested in TV⁣ productions to⁤ reinforce the American image of the⁢ American Girl line, ⁤with‍ a film in progress at ‌Paramount. The European origin of‌ these dolls is unlikely to be highlighted anytime soon.

Botox Production Moves to ‍Ireland

While European pharmaceutical products are currently exempt⁣ from tariffs, some industry observers anticipate this may be temporary.‌ This could impact ⁣the cost of anti-wrinkle injections.
⁢

Although the aesthetic use of botulinum toxin is an American innovation, ⁣the molecule’s success is largely attributed to Allergan, the company that markets Botox. Following Allergan’s acquisition by AbbVie, Botox production has been relocated to Westport, Ireland.

‍ manufacturing takes place in a‌ highly ‍secure facility due to the toxin’s perilous nature, making relocation to the U.S. difficult. ‌Any⁢ price increase due to tariffs would ‌directly affect‍ consumers,‍ as aesthetic Botox treatments are not covered by health insurance.⁣ AbbVie reported nearly $1.7 billion ⁢in aesthetic Botox ⁢sales⁣ in 2024, primarily in the United States.
