Fifty-two percent of South Koreans expected the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to end soon. This is higher than the global national average.

On the 20th (local time), Ipsos, a global opinion polling agency, announced that the results of a recent poll of 28 countries around the world regarding the COVID-19 situation were found.

In this survey, the response rate of ‘the COVID-19 pandemic has been suppressed and will end soon’ was 45%, a 12 percentage point increase from last year’s survey. Saudi Arabia and India had the highest rates with 79% and 77%, respectively, followed by Malaysia (69%) and China (61%), followed by Korea and Italy with 52% each. Korea’s response rate increased by 23 percentage points from a year ago. On the other hand, the US (30%), Australia (29%), Japan (28%) and Canada (28%) forecast the situation pessimistically.

New Zealand (73%), Canada (73%), Germany (71%) and Sweden (70%) ranked high in the question of ‘the government responded well to the COVID-19 response’. The response rate for Korea was 58%, which was comparable to France (59%) and the UK (58%). China and the United States recorded response rates of 47% and 46%, respectively.

Fifty-six percent of all respondents said they should close their borders until it is confirmed that the coronavirus pandemic is contained. This is a 12 percentage point decrease from last year’s survey. People from countries such as Malaysia (85%), India (75%), and Turkey (70%) showed a high agreement to close the border, followed by the Netherlands (34%), Belgium (40%), Italy (42%) and Poland ( 42%) and so on. In Korea, it was 48%.

Ipsos said, “There are differences as to whether the COVID-19 has been contained internationally, but optimism that the hurdle has been crossed is growing.”

This survey was commissioned by the Halifax International Security Forum in the United States and was conducted from September 24 to October 8, targeting 22,000 adults in 28 countries.
