“54/60 Africa” at Arcola Theater: A Musical Quest for Identity

⁢ ⁣Updated June 21, 2025

London’s Arcola theatre is hosting “54/60 Africa,” a musical drama conceived by Femi Elufowoju Jr. The production, reminiscent of Elufowoju’s earlier work, “the Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives,” employs charm and humor to reframe narratives about Africa.

The play centers on 11⁣ travelers ⁢embarking on a symbolic journey through all 54 African nations within a week. Guided by Mama Africa, played by Suzette ‍Llewellyn, the characters aim to “demystify and justify” the continent. The set, designed by Ultz, features a prominent coffin, though the consequences of failing ⁢the quest remain ambiguous.

Based on Elufowoju’s travels, the show incorporates personal, political, social, and environmental history, alongside myths and notions of belonging. Munashe ‍Chirisa delivers comedic⁤ performances as a Ugandan⁢ shopkeeper and a Seychelles traffic warden.Liana Cottrill showcases her dancing⁢ skills, while The Ganda Boys, Denis Mugagga and Daniel Sewagudde, contribute music. Elufowoju himself reads a part,‍ stepping in due to an actor’s illness.

The journey touches on Cameroon’s colonial past, a passport control encounter highlighting dual African/British identity, a visit to Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island, and encounters in Tunisia and Libya.

While the production offers joyful moments, some scenes are brief and the overall message can feel heavy-handed. The drama sometimes resembles a series of‍ sketches, lacking tension and deep character development. this approach may be a deliberate departure from traditional Western dramatic structures.

What’s next

“54/60 Africa” is scheduled to run at the Arcola Theatre in London through July 12.
