Britain has introduced more than 3,500 sanctions against Russia, reaching a milestone where over 90% of Russian oil-producing capacity now falls under economic restrictions, rbc.ua reported. Foreign Secretary Miliband traveled to Ukraine, marking his first official visit to the country. Alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Miliband visited Pryluky, a city where a recent Russian strike on a residential building killed at least 22 people.
Sanctions Against Russian Energy and Supply Chains
The latest British sanctions package targets approximately 40 entities across Russia’s financial, oil, and technology sectors. London aims to disrupt supply chains and restrict Moscow’s ability to fund the war. In addition to covering the vast majority of oil-producing infrastructure, the restrictions apply to more than 600 vessels.
Miliband stated during his visit that Russia could end the conflict immediately but instead continues to escalate attacks on Ukraine. My message to Putin is clear: you cannot wait us out,
Miliband said, according to rbc.ua. While you do not choose the path of peace, Britain will not falter in supporting Ukraine, our values, and our national security. You will remain a pariah.
Winter Energy and Infrastructure Support for Ukraine
London announced £54 million in new funding to support Ukraine through its fifth winter of the war. Out of this total, £20 million will target energy security. These funds will pay for emergency repairs to power grids damaged by Russian strikes, backup generators, solar power installations, and technologies to diversify energy supplies.
The remaining £34 million will support heat and water systems alongside direct financial assistance for Ukrainian families. The British government distributes this aid in cooperation with Ukrainian authorities and international partners, including UNICEF, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the Ukrainian Red Cross. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Britain has provided more than £1 billion in humanitarian and energy assistance to Ukraine.
EU Expands Sanctions Targeting Russian Military-Industrial Complex
The British announcement followed a decision by European Union ambassadors to approve a broad expansion of their own sanctions list targeting Russia. The EU measures add 743 individuals and 826 legal entities linked to the Russian military-industrial complex.
