Coupang announced that it will increase the monthly fee for new ‘Wow Membership’ subscribers by 58% from 4,990 won to 7,890 won, and will apply to existing members starting in August.

As membership is linked to a ticket to use Coupang Play, an online video service, it is also a burden on Coupang Play viewers.

Coupang’s point of view is, “It can be used for less than half the price of major OTT membership services,” and “It is extremely cost-effective as it provides free benefits from shopping to food delivery with one membership.”

However, some say that the increase is excessive considering that Coupang was in the red when the price rose from 2,900 won to 4,990 won in 2021, but it has now turned into a surplus.

“An increase of 58% at once is a bit much. In the past, I subscribed one by one to see only a little content because the price was less onerous, but now that the prices are going up, I choose do that…”

CJ ENM’s OTT platform, Tving, will convert KBO’s previously free professional baseball broadcasts to paid broadcast starting next month.

Recently, the quality of the broadcast has been poor, including interruptions and subtitling errors, and it is disappointing that it is inaccessible to the elderly and others.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to charge a fee. I wish people could see it in many places.”

The government has been trying to raise OTT rates since the end of last year, but Coupang’s sudden rise after the general election raises concerns that its rivals, which have been paying close attention, may also be raising rates one after the other. the other.
