In recent years, observational astronomy has entered the era of big data, and it has become difficult to develop research without the help of cutting-edge results in data science. In fact, collaboration between astronomers and data scientists is increasing. In order to further promote this collaboration, and especially to get students interested in this interdisciplinary field, volunteers from our university, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics jointly planned an Astro seminar. About once a month, we will discuss topics that focus on collaborative research case studies. In addition, we would like to invite lecturers from time to time who work to solve various social problems, not only in the natural sciences, using data science as a tool.

Summary of the fifth lecture

The artificial satellite Gaia, launched in 2013, has continuously observed the stars of the entire sky for about 10 years with the aim of creating a three-dimensional map of the galaxy where humans live. Gaia uses the principle of triangulation to estimate the three-dimensional positions and velocities of stars with high accuracy, equivalent to 1% of the stars in our galaxy.
In this talk, the Gaia data analysis team will provide an overview of the process of estimating the positions and velocities of each star from raw observational data through models and cataloging them. In addition, we will present data science achievements using the Gaia catalog, focusing on a few topics.
