(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jeon Myung-hoon = On May 19, 2016, EgyptAir’s Airbus A320 MS804 crashed suddenly over the Mediterranean Sea. All 66 passengers and crew were killed.

There have been all sorts of speculations about the cause of the disaster, such as terrorism, fire, and explosions of in-flight cell phones.

Citing the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on the 26th (local time), the British daily The Guardian reported that the pilot’s cigarette was identified as the decisive cause of the accident.

According to a 134-page official accident investigation report obtained by Corriere della Serra, the fire started when the pilot’s cigarette came in contact with abnormally high pressure oxygen in the cockpit.

In 2016, smoking was allowed in the cockpit in Egypt. The problem was that the oxygen mask switch in the cockpit was set to ’emergency’ mode instead of ‘normal’ mode at the time. In this state, the oxygen mask continues to discharge high-pressure oxygen.

Normally, pilots check that the oxygen mask switch is in normal mode before takeoff, but the pilots of the aircraft in question at the time missed this check.

In fact, at that time, the voice recorder in the cockpit recorded a ‘shhh’ sound of oxygen being released from the oxygen mask.

The French Air Accident Investigation Agency (BAE) previously said that “the most likely hypothesis of the accident is a cockpit fire,” and that “the fire spread quickly and the pilots lost control of the aircraft.” This is the first time that cigarettes have been identified as the cause of the fire.

The report has been sent to the French Court of Appeal, the Guardian said.

The consequences of the pilot’s negligence were disastrous.

The MS804, which took off from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 11:09 pm on May 18, 2016 in Paris, France local time, took off at 2:40 am on the 19th, about 3 hours and 30 minutes later, and 35 minutes before the arrival at Cairo Airport, Egypt, the destination, radar suddenly disappeared from

The plane, which had been communicating normally with the Egyptian control tower 10 minutes ago, made an incomprehensible flight trajectory, suddenly turning 90 degrees left and then turning 360 degrees to the right just before crashing. The altitude fell from 11,582 m to 4,572 m, and the last record at 3,48 m was ashes with 66 people.

At one time, Egyptian authorities blamed terrorism as the cause of a preliminary investigation. However, an organization claiming to be behind the scenes has not yet appeared. The French authorities, who were investigating the case with Egypt, also said that “there was no evidence of terrorism.”

Some have raised the possibility that the aircraft may catch fire due to overheating, saying that the pilot of the aircraft was carrying an iPhone 6S and iPad mini in the cockpit. Manufacturer Apple immediately refuted the allegations, saying there was “no evidence”.
