Germany’s gaming market is experiencing a significant shift towards digital game purchases, with downloads now accounting for a ample portion of sales. Though, physical media continues to be a dominant force, notably among console players and older demographics.
The Rise of Digital Downloads
Recent data from the German Games Industry Association (game) reveals a growing preference for digital game downloads. Downloads now represent 70% of all games purchased in Germany, a notable increase that reflects evolving consumer habits and the increasing availability of digital-exclusive titles.
This surge in digital sales is partly attributed to the rise of digital-exclusive releases and games that initially launch in early access, such as the popular titles Baldur’s Gate and Enshrouded. These games, available only through digital storefronts, have contributed to the growing prevalence of downloads.
Felix Falk, managing director of game, commented on the trend: “Buying games as downloads is more popular than ever. Compared to the classic physical media available through retailers, downloads are a very easy way for people to buy games. The trend towards exclusively digital sales – weather of indie, blockbuster or, more recently, early access games – is further driving the prevalence of downloads.”
Physical Media’s Enduring Appeal
Despite the strong growth in digital sales, physical media remains a cornerstone of the German gaming market. Console purchases, in particular, lean heavily towards physical copies, with physical media making up 56% of the market’s console purchases.
Falk elaborated on the continued popularity of physical games: “At the same time, console players, especially, are still opting for games on physical media. These remain highly popular as additions to the game collections on the players’ shelves, such as, or as special limited editions.”
Generational Divide in Purchasing Habits
Age plays a significant role in how German gamers choose to purchase their titles. Younger players, aged 20 to 29, overwhelmingly favor digital downloads, with 77% of their PC and console game purchases being digital.
Conversely, physical media holds greater appeal for older demographics. Players aged 50 and above made up 47% of German PC and console physical purchases in 2024, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. This suggests a continued appreciation for tangible game collections among older gamers.
Broader Trends in the German Games Industry
The overall German games industry has experienced a slowdown in growth. the number of game growth companies in Germany fell by 4% in 2025, a shift after years of expansion.Total sales revenue for games, hardware, and online services also saw a decline of 6% between 2023 and 2024.
Specifically, 2024 witnessed a 17% drop in purchases for mobile, PC, and console games, alongside a 10% decrease in hardware sales. However, the revenue generated from online gaming services bucked this trend, increasing by 12% compared to 2023. This indicates a resilient and growing demand for online gaming services amidst broader market fluctuations.
