At 70 years old, John Webster⁢ is a unique sight on the badminton court. While most players his age are enjoying retirement, Webster is battling it out against opponents frequently enough half his age.

“The world of badminton had changed in every aspect,” Webster said, reflecting on his return to the sport ⁣after a hiatus. “Walking onto ⁣a show court was like a time warp. Looking back I had been playing in black-and-white TV, and now stepped into full-color HD. It was simply awesome.”

Webster’s journey back to competitive badminton hasn’t been without its challenges.He ⁣admits to facing lopsided scorelines, acknowledging the⁢ difficulty of competing against players who⁤ started their training much earlier.

“When I first entered the tour, I had aims of more success, but it’s⁣ a strong tide to swim⁣ against when I never played as a junior,” he confessed.

“It’s akin to climbing those big mountains again, when bad weather beat me back, and I went up ⁣again for a fifth attempt in total adversity, scaring myself to the point of my ⁤feet trembling me off the ice footholds that I cut, ⁢and pushing beyond where I could not reverse,” he shared.

Webster’s determination‍ has resonated with fans,who see him as an inspiration. His first ‍win on⁤ the ⁢BWF⁤ circuit, against a 34-year-old opponent in 2022, was a notably memorable moment.

“Being out on a badminton court when my ‍opponents are generally 40 to 50 years younger, people tell me that is a victory,” Webster said.

He feels a responsibility to represent not just himself, but also those who can no longer play the sport they love.

“When I have performed well and the umpire says: ‘respect’, I feel too that I am playing for them, as most of them are former players and ‍they ⁤too must stay engaged with the ‘addiction’,” he explained.

Webster’s story has garnered attention online, with fans requesting selfies and spare‍ shirts. Many are curious about how he maintains his mobility at his age.

“Much⁤ of that is becuase my‍ whole family were incredibly active. I never stopped moving⁤ as a kid, I climbed trees, cycled thousands of⁣ miles a year, 200 miles in a day and went climbing most weekends,” he revealed.

“It made me tough and durable (and) my thought processes have not changed or aged in any way.”
