Emergency responders who worked at the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001, attacks have a nearly tripled risk of developing lung cancer, according to a new study.

Researchers attribute the elevated rates to exposure to the toxic dust and fumes that blanketed Ground zero in the aftermath of the collapse of the Twin Towers. The findings, published this month in JAMA Network Open, highlight the long-term health consequences faced by those who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts.

“We discovered that responders with more severe exposures to WTC dust had up to 2.9 times greater risk of developing lung cancer compared to those with minimal exposure,” stated Dr. Rajesh Mehta, lead author of the study and researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in a press release accompanying the publication.

Study Details and Findings

The study analyzed data from over 16,000 World Trade Center Health Program participants, tracking their health outcomes for more than two decades. Researchers categorized responders based on the intensity of their exposure to dust and debris at Ground Zero.The analysis revealed a clear dose-response relationship: the higher the exposure, the greater the risk of lung cancer.

Specifically,the study found:

  • Responders with high exposure had a 2.9 times higher risk of lung cancer.
  • Moderate exposure was associated with a 1.8 times higher risk.
  • Even minimal exposure showed a statistically significant, though smaller, increase in risk.

The researchers controlled for other known risk factors for lung cancer,such as smoking history and family history of the disease,strengthening the link between 9/11 exposures and increased cancer incidence.

Who is affected?

The findings are particularly concerning for the approximately 400,000 individuals who responded to the 9/11 attacks, including:

  • First responders (firefighters, police officers, paramedics)
  • Construction workers
  • Volunteers
  • Residents and workers who lived or worked near Ground Zero

Many of these individuals are already enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program,which provides medical monitoring and treatment for 9/11-related health conditions. However, the study underscores the need for continued vigilance and proactive screening for lung cancer among this population.
