95-Year-Old OAP Left on Pavement with Broken Hip: Shocking NHS Prioritization Fail
A 95-year-old woman named Winifred Soanes fell on the pavement in Christchurch High Street, Dorset, while walking with her 92-year-old husband, Andrew. She broke her hip and lay on the ground for five hours in freezing conditions while waiting for an ambulance. Winifred was unable to move due to severe pain.
Multiple bystanders called emergency services, explaining Winifred’s vulnerable condition. Despite their efforts, they were told she was “not a priority.” Local shop workers and market stallholders helped by propping up her head with shoe boxes and providing blankets and hot water bottles to keep her warm. Staff at a nearby store provided sleeping bags, while others brought food and coffee for Andrew, who is a diabetic and an army veteran, and stayed by his wife’s side.
The ambulance finally arrived at 7:45 PM and transported Winifred to the hospital, where she is still receiving care. Unfortunately, Andrew has since developed a chest infection from being in the cold for too long and cannot visit his wife.
Community members expressed frustration over the incident, criticizing the emergency response system. Jennifer Baylis, a charity shop worker, shared her distress at seeing Winifred in such pain and vulnerability. David Lovell, the first person to call the ambulance, described the chilling conditions and the helplessness they felt while waiting.
The South Western Ambulance Service issued a statement, apologizing for the delay and acknowledging that they failed to meet expected response times. The spokesperson noted challenges in handover times at hospitals, affecting ambulance availability for emergencies.
Despite the distressing situation, Andrew appreciated the community’s support during this crisis. Winifred is awaiting a specialist operation for her injuries and hopes for a swift recovery.
