Stamos Shares Mike Love’s Reaction to Brian Wilson’s Death

john Stamos, the ”Full House” star and honorary Beach Boys member, was the one who broke the news of Brian Wilson’s death to Mike Love. Stamos recounted the somber moment, noting Love’s stunned silence following the declaration of his cousin’s passing Wednesday at age 82.
Stamos, speaking before Love’s induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York, said, “I said, ‘Mike, your cousin passed away,’ and his face went blank… and we sat in the car for two and a half hours or so… he didn’t say one word.”
Wilson, who had dementia and was under conservatorship as may 2024, co-founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, and cousin Mike Love. He also struggled with mental health and addiction for many years. The Beach Boys played a significant role in defining the california sound with hits like “Surfer Girl” and “California Girls.”
Love, 84, honored Wilson as “my brother in music” during the Hall of fame ceremony. He previously wrote on social media,”Brian Wilson wasn’t just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound.”
Love added, “Our journey together was filled with moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE . Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio.”
Numerous figures, including Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, offered tributes to Wilson. Newsom stated that Wilson “fundamentally changed modern music,” solidifying the Beach Boys’ role as the defining California band.
Wilson is survived by six children, including Carnie and Wendy Wilson of Wilson phillips. He was preceded in death by his wife, Melinda, and brothers Dennis and Carl.
