Mysterious Iron ⁣Bar Discovered‍ Within⁢ the Ring Nebula

Astronomers have discovered a mysterious,‍ bar-shaped cloud of iron‍ atoms inside the ‍iconic⁣ Ring Nebula, first observed in 1779.

Finding Details

The findings, detailing the structure and‌ composition of this unusual cloud, were published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical⁣ Society. Researchers‌ from University College⁢ London‌ (UCL) and Cardiff University contributed to the study.

Nebula Structure

The ‌iron cloud is shaped like a bar or stripe and‌ aligns precisely within the inner elliptical layer of‌ the Ring Nebula. This structure is visible in images captured⁣ by telescopes, including the James Webb Space telescope.

scale of the Discovery

The length of the iron bar is approximately 500 times the orbital distance of⁤ Pluto from the Sun. this indicates a‍ significant⁢ structure within the nebula.
