Vance Criticizes Local Leaders Over Immigration Enforcement in Minneapolis

Vice President JD Vance on Thursday criticized Minnesota Governor‌ Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, accusing them of hindering ⁢federal immigration enforcement ‍efforts he described as “chaotic.” His ‌remarks followed meetings with immigration⁢ officials⁢ and local leaders ⁢in Minneapolis amid a surge of federal agents deployed to the state.

Federal Immigration Enforcement Increase

The Biden management has increased the ‌presence of Immigration‌ and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents in ⁤Minnesota to bolster enforcement. This increase, which began in January⁣ 2024,‌ has ⁢resulted in thousands of⁣ agents being ⁣deployed to the state.

According ‌to ‍U.S. Customs and border Protection data, ⁢Border Patrol apprehensions along the northern border, including Minnesota, increased 88% between ⁤fiscal years 2023 and 2024.⁣ This increase prompted the federal response.

Vance’s Criticism of ⁢Local Officials

Vance stated ‌he does not require agreement from Walz⁣ or‍ Frey on immigration policy. Rather, he urged them to support federal officials by empowering⁣ local authorities to assist in enforcement. He specifically called for local ⁣officials to cooperate with federal agents, implying a ⁢lack of sufficient support currently.

“What I do need them to do is⁣ empower their local officials to help our federal officials out in ‌a way where we can actually restore law and order,” ⁢vance said to the ⁢media on Thursday.

Local Response to Increased enforcement

The increased federal ⁤presence has sparked protests from civilians and raised concerns among local leaders. Some ‍officials have expressed outrage ‌over the methods‍ and scope of the enforcement actions.‌

Minneapolis City Council Member Aisha‍ Gomez stated on January 18, 2024, that the increased ICE activity was creating “fear and distrust” within the city’s immigrant communities.

Purpose of Vance’s Visit

Vance framed his visit as an effort to “restore law and order” in Minnesota. He ‍emphasized the need for stronger immigration enforcement to address the influx of individuals crossing the northern⁤ border.

The Biden administration⁣ allocated $1.2 billion ⁢in fiscal year 2024 to enhance border security and immigration enforcement, according to the Department⁤ of Homeland Security budget.
