The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group has entered the area of responsibility for U.S. Central Command, which includes the Middle East and Iran, CENTCOM confirmed Monday.
The warships’ movement toward Iran followed a warning from the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, who said his forces had their “finger on the trigger.”
CENTCOM confirmed via a social media post that the USS abraham Lincoln and its accompanying vessels are operating in the Indian Ocean after deploying to the Middle East.This is the first official statement from the Department of Defense acknowledging the carrier group’s arrival in Central Command’s area of responsibility. The deployment aims “to promote regional security and stability.”
A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News earlier Monday that the strike group had crossed into the CENTCOM area of operations.
The strike group includes the Lincoln and three guided missile destroyers: the USS Frank E. Petersen,Jr., the USS Spruance, and the USS Michael Murphy. Aircraft aboard the Lincoln include squadrons of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, F-35C fighter jets, and MH-60R/S helicopters.
