Indonesia Landslide Death Toll Reaches 53

A landslide in West bandung,​ Indonesia, continues to prompt a search and rescue operation, now extended⁤ through Friday. Authorities report 23 Indonesian navy personnel training in the area are among those affected.

The disaster highlights Indonesia’s vulnerability to‌ landslides and flooding during the rainy season, which typically lasts from October to March. Recent events‌ underscore the connection between deforestation⁢ and increased risk. Last year, landslides and flooding ⁤on Sumatra island resulted in​ approximately 1,200 deaths and ⁢displaced​ over 240,000 people.The⁣ Indonesian government has cited forest loss as a contributing factor, as trees and thier root systems play⁣ a crucial role ‌in absorbing rainfall and stabilizing soil.

Earlier this month,⁢ Siau island experienced a flash flood⁣ caused⁤ by heavy rainfall, resulting in‍ at least 16 fatalities.These incidents are common throughout the Indonesian archipelago.
