A Pathway to France for Top Turkish Riders
A key incentive for competitors in Marmaris and Istanbul is the opportunity to qualify for L’Etape du Tour in France. Riders who achieve top rankings within their categories will earn the right to compete on French soil, alongside participants from around the globe.
Expanding the L’Etape Series Global Footprint
The L’Étape Series by Tour de France has rapidly expanded its international presence, now encompassing over 30 events in 20 countries. The series’ return to Dubai on , marked a successful second edition, solidifying its position as a premier cycling event in the Middle East.
Marmaris: A Strategic Choice for a Mountain Challenge
Organizers selected Marmaris for its distinctive terrain, offering a challenging mountain-focused course. The region’s combination of steep climbs and coastal scenery was highlighted as an ideal setting for a race inspired by the Tour de France’s famed mountain stages. The selection process, conducted in collaboration with 78 Event, prioritized destinations that could offer a compelling race story and actively sought to host the event.
Two courses will be offered in Marmaris: a long course spanning 96 kilometers (nearly 60 miles) and a shorter course of 66 kilometers (41 miles). Both routes are designed to replicate the professional-style race experience, incorporating coastal stretches, bays, mountain passes and areas rich in historical significance.
Local Support and Tourism Benefits
Local officials in Marmaris view the event as a significant opportunity to enhance the city’s brand value and attract sports-minded tourists. The Marmaris district governor emphasized the event’s alignment with the city’s identity and its potential to foster collaboration between institutions, local government, civil society, and the private sector, while also promoting healthy living and environmental awareness.
Marmaris Mayor Acar Unlu noted a shift in tourism trends, with visitors increasingly seeking experiential travel beyond traditional “sea, sun, and sand” offerings. He believes L’Etape Marmaris will provide a compelling reason for returning visitors and could stimulate the local tourism economy at the start of the season. He also highlighted cycling’s accessibility as a means of raising awareness about sports, culture, and alternative transportation.
The Symbolic Jerseys of the Tour de France
The event will showcase the iconic jerseys associated with the Tour de France, each representing a distinct achievement within the race:
- Yellow Jersey (Maillot Jaune): Awarded to the overall race leader.
- Polka Dot Jersey: Recognizes standout climbing performance.
- Green Jersey: Signifies sprint speed and points-based racing.
- White Jersey: Highlights young talent and future potential.
Organizers emphasized that these jerseys are more than just visual elements; they embody the Tour de France’s rich traditions and history.
Building on the Success of L’Etape Türkiye
The addition of the Marmaris event builds upon the foundation laid by L’Etape Türkiye by Tour de France, which took place in Istanbul on . Türkiye will now be represented by two races within the series in 2026.
The series is delivered in cooperation with 78 Event, a sports events company, and is organized under the umbrella of Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organizer of the Tour de France. Mathieu Clanchin, Project Manager of the L’Etape Series by Tour de France at ASO, described the Tour de France as “one of the top three events in the world after the World Cup and the Olympic Games,” and emphasized the goal of bringing that experience to amateur riders.
The Marmaris event is being sponsored by Visa and Maximiles Black, with additional support from Yuce Auto-Skoda, Mosso Bicycle, Shimano Türkiye, and Marti Resort Marmaris.
