A novel, cap-like device utilizing light therapy is showing promise as a potential treatment for hair loss, offering a less cumbersome alternative to traditional phototherapy methods. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a flexible, wearable device that delivers near-infrared light directly to the scalp, aiming to revitalize hair follicles and combat the progression of hair loss. Hair loss is a common concern affecting millions worldwide and while treatments exist, many come with drawbacks. Drug-based therapies, while often effective, can raise concerns about long-term side effects, prompting a search for safer alternatives. Phototherapy, which uses light to modulate cellular activity, has emerged as a potential solution, but existing devices have presented challenges.

Traditional phototherapy devices are often bulky and helmet-shaped, limiting their practicality for everyday use. They are typically confined to clinical settings or require dedicated home use, and their reliance on focused light sources – such as lasers or LEDs – can make it difficult to achieve uniform light distribution across the entire scalp. The KAIST team sought to address these limitations with a more comfortable and effective approach.

“The problem was that existing light therapy devices were heavy and hard in the form of helmets, so they could only be used in hospitals or at home,” researchers noted. “There was also a limitation in that it was difficult to stimulate the entire scalp by using a method of irradiating light only to a small area using a laser.”

OLED Technology and Scalp Conformity

The key innovation lies in the use of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Unlike traditional point light sources, OLEDs emit light across a wider surface, allowing for more even irradiation of the scalp. The researchers integrated these OLEDs into a soft, fabric-like material, creating a cap that conforms naturally to the contours of the scalp. This design ensures consistent light exposure and maximizes comfort for the wearer.

The device utilizes near-infrared light in the 730-740nm band, a wavelength identified as particularly effective in stimulating hair papilla cells – crucial regulators of the hair growth cycle. The flexibility of the material allows the cap to follow the scalp’s natural curves, ensuring consistent light exposure across the entire area.

Promising Results in Cellular Studies

Experiments conducted by the research team demonstrated a significant positive effect on hair papilla cell activity. Dermal papilla cells exposed to the OLED light exhibited increased mobility compared to a control group. Importantly, the proportion of aged dermal papilla cells – a key factor in hair loss progression – decreased by approximately 91.6%.

“A key outcome of this study is demonstrating that precisely engineered light wavelengths can effectively suppress hair-follicle cell aging,” explained Eunhae Cho, a researcher at KAIST. “It can be used in everyday life by implementing it in the form of a soft hat instead of a hard helmet-type device.”

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy or red light therapy, is gaining traction as a potential treatment for various conditions, including hair loss. The underlying principle involves modulating cellular function with light.
