Bridgeport Warming Center Open After Cold-Related Death | Mayor Ganim

Bridgeport Officials Extend Cold Weather Protocol, Open Warming Centers

Bridgeport, CT – City officials are urging residents to take precautions as a period of intense cold continues to grip the region, extending a Cold Weather Protocol through noon on Tuesday, . The extension comes after a homeless man was found dead from exposure on , prompting increased efforts to protect vulnerable populations.

Mayor Joe Ganim visited the Greater Bridgeport Transit bus terminal on Main Street on Sunday to assess conditions and speak with individuals utilizing the facility as an emergency warming center. “We have asked Greater Bridgeport Transit to keep the doors open all night until tomorrow, because people need to have a safe haven during these potentially deadly temperatures,” Ganim said, according to a statement released by the city.

The move to extend the Cold Weather Protocol reflects a heightened awareness of the dangers posed by the extreme temperatures, particularly for those without adequate shelter. The death of the homeless man on Boston Avenue served as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of prolonged exposure.

“In light of that death, we want to make sure we’re taking every step – and extra steps – to make sure the people of Bridgeport are safe, no matter what Mother Nature throws at us,” Ganim added.

Warming centers are currently open around the clock throughout the city, providing refuge from the frigid conditions. The GBT Station at 710 Water Street is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Bridgeport Public Library branches – including the Main Branch, Black Rock Branch, Newfield Branch, North Branch, Beardsley Branch and the temporarily closed East Side Branch – are also available as warming locations.

Senior centers are open weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, offering a warm space for elderly residents. Locations include the Black Rock Senior Center, East Side Senior Center, and Eisenhower Senior Center.

City officials are also encouraging residents to check on elderly neighbors and family members who may require assistance during the cold weather. The Operation Care initiative is connecting individuals experiencing homelessness with shelters, including Prospect House, Bridgeport Rescue Mission, and Alpha Community. Those needing assistance can call 2-1-1 to reach the Homeless Outreach Team or visit 650 Park Avenue.

The Office of Emergency Management advises residents to be cautious and prepared for potential snow this weekend, with weather conditions being closely monitored. Extra travel time is encouraged, especially during morning commutes when roads may be slippery.

Residents are reminded to take basic safety precautions, including checking heating devices, avoiding the use of stoves or ovens for heating due to the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, and following manufacturer instructions when using generators – never operating them indoors. Pet owners are urged to bring their animals inside. Residents should also be aware of the potential for icy conditions on pipes and ground cover.

The current Cold Weather Protocol advises residents to bundle up if they must venture outdoors and to be prepared for wind chill values near zero. The protocol extension is intended to provide continued protection during a period of sustained, dangerous cold.
