Production is underway in Australia on Greyhound 2, the sequel to the 2020 World War II thriller starring Tom Hanks, Apple Studios announced. Stephen Graham will reprise his role as Charlie Cole alongside Hanks, who also penned the script for the follow-up.
Joining the cast are Jack Patten, whose recent work includes a role in the MGM+ series Robin Hood, and Elisabeth Shue, who appeared in the original Greyhound. The film will follow Captain Krause (Hanks) and his crew as they navigate the Pacific Ocean, building on the story established in the first film which centered on the treacherous waters of the Atlantic.
The original Greyhound, which premiered on Apple TV+ in July 2020, proved a significant success for the streamer, setting viewership records and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound. The film depicted a Navy veteran’s first command as he led a convoy of 37 ships through waters fraught with Nazi U-boats during the early months of America’s alliance with Great Britain and the Allied Forces.
Greyhound 2 is receiving support from Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund. Graham is also currently working on a new Apple TV+ series based on the novels of Lars Kepler, alongside Zazie Beetz and Liev Schreiber. He recently received an Emmy Award for his performance in the Netflix series Sell itescence. Patten is represented by Gersh and United Management.
The sequel promises to expand the scope of the Greyhound saga, shifting the action from the Atlantic to the Pacific theater of World War II. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider and produced by Gary Goetzman, continuing the creative team from the first installment.
The story is inspired by the historical events of the Battle of the Atlantic, a crucial period in the early stages of the war. The sequel will explore the challenges faced by Captain Krause and his crew as they contribute to turning the tide of the conflict in a new and demanding environment.
