NBA All-Star Game 2024: Early Start Time & New Format Explained

by David Thompson - Sports Editor

Los Angeles will host a dramatically different NBA All-Star Game this , as the league attempts to inject new life into its annual showcase. In a departure from traditional conference-based matchups, this year’s game will pit two teams of American-born players against a squad comprised entirely of international stars in a round-robin tournament.

The shift in format comes after years of experimentation. The NBA has tweaked the All-Star Game repeatedly in an effort to boost viewership and engagement. The standard East versus West format, a staple for much of the game’s history, was abandoned in in favor of a draft system where the leading vote-getters from each conference selected their rosters. The game saw the introduction of the Elam Ending, a format designed to encourage more competitive play by eliminating the game clock in favor of a target score. The conference versus conference format returned in , but without the Elam Ending.

Last year laid the groundwork for the changes. The league moved away from a single All-Star Game, instead implementing a mini-tournament featuring four teams. Three of those teams were composed of NBA All-Stars, while the fourth consisted of first- and second-year players who had previously participated in the Rising Stars challenge. Despite the overhaul, the NBA didn’t see the anticipated surge in interest, prompting further adjustments for this year’s event.

The “USA vs. World” concept is the latest attempt to revitalize the All-Star Game. The tournament will feature three teams, with two rosters filled with American players and the third exclusively with international players. The teams will compete in a round-robin format, beginning with three 12-minute games.

The decision to embrace an international theme is also strategically aligned with NBC’s broadcast schedule. The network, returning as an NBA partner after a two-decade absence, is also broadcasting the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The timing of the All-Star Game, now scheduled to begin at (2 p.m. Local time), three hours earlier than usual, is intended to serve as a lead-in to NBC’s nightly tape-delay coverage of the Olympics, particularly as the games often take place in time zones outside of the traditional U.S. Primetime window.

This isn’t the first time the NBA has altered the All-Star Game format. The league has consistently sought ways to make the event more compelling, recognizing its importance as a showcase for the league’s brightest stars and a key marketing opportunity. The shift towards a more competitive and globally-focused format reflects a broader trend in professional sports, where leagues are increasingly looking to expand their international reach and appeal to a wider audience.

The games themselves will be fast-paced. Each game will be played to 40 points, with the first team to reach that total declared the winner. The two teams that emerge victorious from the initial round will then advance to the All-Star final, which will also be played to 40 points. This condensed scoring format is designed to maintain a high level of intensity and excitement throughout the tournament.

The selection of All-Stars for the game continues to involve a weighted voting system. Fan voting accounts for 50% of the selection process, while a media panel and current players each contribute 25%. NBA head coaches will then be responsible for selecting the remaining players to complete the rosters.

The NBA’s ongoing efforts to revamp the All-Star Game underscore the league’s commitment to innovation and its desire to provide a compelling experience for fans. Whether the “USA vs. World” format will finally deliver the desired boost in interest remains to be seen, but it represents the latest chapter in the league’s ongoing quest to reimagine its mid-season spectacle.
