Battlefield 6: Addressing Season Delays & Future Content Plans

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Battlefield 6’s Season 2 is facing a slight delay, pushing its launch to , with content rolling out in phases through mid-May. While the initial launch of Season 1 followed closely on the heels of the game’s release, this approximately one-month delay for Season 2 raised concerns about the timeliness of future online plans. However, DICE, a studio within the broader Battlefield Studios family, asserts that this is not indicative of a developing trend.

In a recent interview, Producer Phil Gerette explained the reasoning behind the delay. According to Gerette, the team is prioritizing quality and ensuring the season meets player expectations. “We started with Battlefield 6, and our record wasn’t great, but this rollout is going really well, and we’re happy about that. But getting a launch going still takes a lot of work and time. We looked at the plans for Season 2 and wanted to give it a little bit more time to polish, to make sure it’s hitting the expectations of the players,” he stated.

Gerette emphasized that planning a season involves more than just the in-game content itself. Marketing efforts and coordination across various departments are crucial to ensure a smooth and impactful launch. “Once you’ve planned a season, there’s a lot that goes into it, like the marketing behind it, making sure the timing doesn’t just impact the game itself, but impacts a lot of other things. It’s the same with future seasons. Absolutely, we need to make sure these seasons hit as expected, and we’ve taken a lot of different measures across different departments to make sure players get the season performance right after the season ends.”

The rollout of Season 2 will be staggered, with the initial launch on followed by two subsequent phases, each spaced approximately one month apart. This means that by , the third phase will have been live for a full month, and players will likely be anticipating the next wave of content.

Season 2 will introduce the new map, “Contaminated,” designed for focused combat with multiple pathways and flanking opportunities. Alongside the map, a Limited-Time Mode (LTM) will expand Battlefield 6’s narrative and introduce new tactical elements in the fight against Pax Armata. Later in the season, players can expect another high-intensity map and a separate LTM set within an underground base shrouded in darkness.

Beyond new content, Season 2 focuses heavily on improvements to game progression and overall player experience. Challenge parameters have been broadened, streamlining the challenge system by reducing reliance on highly mode-specific tasks. The daily sidearm challenge has been removed from regular rotation, and assists now contribute to Daily Challenge completion. DICE plans to continue monitoring completion rates and adjusting challenge criteria as needed.

Battle Pass progression has also been revamped to be more rewarding. The system for earning Battle Pass Tokens from Career XP has been recalculated, allowing players to progress more quickly through regular gameplay and Weekly Challenges. Progression in the REDSEC game mode (Battle Royale and Gauntlet) has been accelerated, with increased Career XP and Weapon XP earn rates, aiming to balance progression between REDSEC and the core Battlefield 6 experience.

The changes to progression aren’t limited to the core Battlefield 6 experience. REDSEC, the free-to-play companion to Battlefield 6, will see increased Career XP and Weapon XP earn rates in both Battle Royale and Gauntlet modes. This adjustment aims to create a more balanced progression system across both games.

While the delay of Season 2 may initially disappoint some players, DICE’s commitment to polishing the content and improving the overall player experience suggests a deliberate approach to long-term game health. The studio’s focus on addressing player feedback and streamlining progression systems indicates a willingness to adapt and refine Battlefield 6 based on community input. The staggered rollout of Season 2 content, while extending the wait, could also allow DICE to gather feedback and make adjustments to each phase, ensuring a more polished and engaging experience for players.
