Eric Dane Dies: Grey’s Anatomy’s ‘McSteamy’ Remembered by Hollywood

Eric Dane, the actor best known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, “McSteamy,” on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with ALS. His passing, which occurred on , was announced by his representatives and has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans across Hollywood.

Dane revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in , having first experienced symptoms a year and a half prior. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually, death. According to the ALS Association, approximately 1 in 300 Americans are affected by the disease.

“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” a statement from his representatives read. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Dane’s career spanned decades, but he achieved widespread recognition for his role as the charming and often controversial plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Sloan, on Grey’s Anatomy. His character, nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans, became a central figure in the series during his eight-year run. Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane also starred as Captain Tom Chandler in the TNT post-apocalyptic drama The Last Ship (2014-2018), and more recently, took on the role of Cal Jacobs, Nate Jacobs’ father, in HBO’s critically acclaimed series Euphoria (2019-2022).

Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, expressed his grief in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”

The official Instagram account for Euphoria and HBO Max jointly posted, “We are deeply saddened by the news of Eric Dane’s passing. He was incredibly talented and HBO was fortunate to have worked with him on three seasons of Euphoria. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Fellow Grey’s Anatomy cast members also shared their condolences. Kevin McKidd, who played Dr. Owen Hunt, wrote “Rest in Peace Buddy” on his Instagram Story. James Pickens Jr., who portrayed Dr. Richard Webber, posted simply, “Rest in Peace.” Sarah Drew, who played Dr. April Kepner, shared a similar message on her Instagram Story.

ABC and 20th Television released a joint statement acknowledging the loss: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane. His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on Grey’s Anatomy left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”

Alyssa Milano, who worked with Dane on the series Charmed, remembered him as possessing a “razor-sharp sense of humor” and a playful spirit. “I can’t stop seeing that spark in Eric’s eye right before he’d say something that would either make you spit out your drink or rethink your entire perspective,” she shared in a tribute. She also spoke of his devotion to his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, noting how his demeanor softened when speaking of them.

Nina Dobrev, who co-starred with Dane in the 2022 film Redeeming Love, described him as “warm, generous, prepared, and so passionate about what he did.” She added, “He led with kindness and made everyone on our set feel seen. ALS is a cruel and unforgiving disease. May his memory inspire more research, awareness, and progress toward a cure. He will be deeply missed.”

Michael Grassi, the creator of Brilliant Minds, where Dane guest-starred in an episode centered on ALS, praised Dane as a “TV icon” and a “tremendous talent.” DeMane Davis, producing director and executive producer of Brilliant Minds, echoed this sentiment, describing it as a “gift to witness his talent, determination and joy” during his final role.

Travis Van Winkle, Dane’s co-star on The Last Ship, shared his admiration for the actor, stating he “learned so much from Eric” and acknowledged his “strength and his heart.” Alexander Ludwig, who worked with Dane on 2024’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, expressed his sadness, saying, “Ugh this hurts so much. Will miss you Eric and loved our time together.” Selma Blair, who appeared with Dane in an early role on Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, simply posted a video of the sitcom with the message, “I love you. And yours.”

Ashton Kutcher also paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging Dane’s participation in his fantasy football league and calling for continued efforts to solve ALS. Maria Shriver shared that Dane had chosen her publishing imprint for his memoir, and spoke of his willingness to share his experience with the disease.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His legacy extends beyond his on-screen performances, encompassing his recent advocacy for ALS awareness and research, a fight he faced with courage and determination.
