Des Moines University to Host Open House for New Regional Simulation Center

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences will host a free public open house on , from 3 to 6 p.m. For its new Regional Simulation Center. The facility, located in Ryan Hall within the DMU32 Health and Business Complex at 3200 Grand Ave. In Des Moines, aims to advance health care education, training and workforce development across Central Iowa.

The simulation center represents a collaborative investment, with a multi-million dollar contribution from the Polk County Board of Supervisors. Partners in the project also include Des Moines Area Community College, Des Moines Public Schools, and Mercy College of Health Sciences.

The 90,000-square-foot facility is designed to provide a hands-on training environment for the region’s health care programs, utilizing innovative simulation technology. Attendees at the open house will have the opportunity to participate in guided tours and live demonstrations featuring high-fidelity manikins.

According to Angela L. Walker Franklin, PhD, president and CEO of DMU, the center’s core purpose is to “give people the chance to practice critical skills, decision-making and teamwork before they face those situations in real life.” She emphasized that the simulation center allows learners to “make mistakes safely, to train together across disciplines and to build confidence in environments that look and feel like the real world.”

The center is designed to support a wide range of learners, from high school students exploring healthcare careers to experienced Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) seeking to refine their response times. The goal is to provide a realistic and safe environment for healthcare professionals and students to hone their skills.

The Des Moines University Regional Simulation Center is intended to strengthen health care education, workforce development, and training throughout Central Iowa. The open house offers the public a first look at the state-of-the-art facility and the innovative technologies it houses.
