An elderly man in his 90s from a nursing home in Italy died while trying to escape through a window in a second-floor room. His acquaintances suspect that he had an accident while trying to get out of the nursing home, feeling lonely.

According to The Sun and Daily Mail on the 22nd, Mario Pinotti (91), who was staying at a nursing home in Veneto, northeastern Italy, was found hanging outside a window around 6:30 am on the 19th.

At the time, he was hanging from the outer wall between the first and second floors of the nursing home, and had a rope made of woven bedspreads around his waist.

“The old man appeared to have stumbled and smashed his head and chest against a concrete wall while trying to escape out of a window in a second-floor room using a bed linen,” the authorities said. “The bedspread squeezed Mario’s back, causing serious lung damage, which is the most likely cause of death,” he added.

The director of the nursing home was shocked by Mario’s death. In an interview with the local media, the director said, “Mario was in good health and had no degenerative diseases. From a psychological point of view, he was also peaceful.” said.

However, those around Mario saw that he, who was free, felt stuffy and lonely in a closed nursing home facility. In order to enjoy freedom, Mario has been single all his life, receiving little help from his nephew, friends and neighbors.

As he was no longer able to lead a normal life on his own, he entered a nursing home in March of last year. Mario’s guardians and friends said he “may have been lonely when his family visits were interrupted due to COVID-19.” Nursing home staff also said, “The house where Mario lived was nearby, and he probably wanted to go there.”

Local Mayor Fielluigi Mosca recalled, “Mario came to the building twice a year before entering the nursing home. He was that active. He was also active in expressing his political opinions and did not want to enter the nursing home.” He said that the extreme loneliness he must have felt was the motive for his escape.

The local media also said, “The caregivers and nurses would not have been able to take the place of the family. They would have missed people.”
