A research team led by Professor Won Hong-hee of Samsung Convergence Medical School reveals the complex relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease

[서울=뉴스핌] Reporter Choi Hyun-min = Sungkyunkwan University announced on the 3rd that the research team led by Professor Won Hong-hee of Samsung Convergence Medical Science Institute and Samsung Genome Research Institute at Samsung Seoul Hospital performed a meta-analysis of more than 500 cohorts to conscientiously analyze the effects of obesity on the incidence of nine cardiovascular diseases and the risk of death. .

This study was conducted by combining a genome-based study called Mendelian randomized study with meta-analysis of epidemiological studies.

In the meantime, it is known that obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, but each study showed very heterogeneous results according to obesity metrics, race, and cohort characteristics.

In addition, since obesity has a characteristic that a bidirectional interaction with the disease is possible, there is a limitation in that it is difficult to confirm the exact causality or the direction of the interaction only by observational studies.

To solve this problem, the researchers grafted genome-based research to confirm causality with observational studies.

The Mendelian randomized study used in this study is based on the formation of groups with high and low genetic mutations that increase the risk of obesity as genetic mutations are randomly assigned during meiosis. Comparing the difference in the risk of cardiovascular diseases for these two groups can evaluate whether obesity causes these diseases without intervention.

The Mendelian randomized study has the strength to confirm independent results from confounding variables and retrocausal relationships caused by the environment because groups are randomly divided at the stage of meiosis. in contrast to that

The researchers presented a new, high-level evidence for the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease, which has been studied for a long time, by utilizing both the advantages of association confirmation, which is the strength of large-scale observational studies, and the advantage of causality, the strength of genome-based research. .

Professor Won Hong-hee said, “This study is meaningful in that it systematically presented scientific evidence on the risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity, which is recognized as a big problem worldwide by integrating large-scale epidemiological and genomic studies.” “As obesity has been shown to be responsible for the risk of various cardiovascular diseases and mortality, it is important to maintain an appropriate weight and healthy eating habits to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

The research results were published in the prestigious European Heart Journal.
