Aadhaar, Voter ID Valid for SIR in Bihar: SC Ruling
Supreme Court backs Aadhaar, Voter IDs for Bihar’s SIR Exercise Amidst Opposition Uproar
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ruled that aadhaar and Voter IDs are acceptable documents for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, citing their inherent “sanctity” and presumption of genuineness. This decision comes as the Rajya Sabha faced another day of adjournment due to persistent protests by Opposition members over the same issue.
Supreme court’s Stance on Document Validity
In a significant progress, the apex court stated that while ration cards might be susceptible to forgery, Aadhaar and Voter IDs carry a greater degree of authenticity. “As far as ration cards are concerned we can say they can be forged easily but Aadhaar and voter cards have some sanctity and have presumption of genuineness. You continue accepting these documents,” the bench remarked.
The court also noted that the Election Commission (EC) had previously accepted an earlier order and affirmed in its counter affidavit that Aadhaar, voter cards, and ration cards were indeed required to be accepted for such exercises. This judicial backing provides a clear directive on the acceptable forms of identification for the SIR process in Bihar.
Rajya Sabha Adjourned Over SIR Controversy
The ongoing controversy surrounding the SIR exercise in Bihar continued to disrupt parliamentary proceedings, leading to the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha for the entire day on monday. Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) intensified their protests, demanding a discussion on the matter.
During the Zero Hour, Deputy Chairman Harivansh announced that he had received 26 notices under Rule 267, seeking discussions on various issues, including the SIR exercise and alleged discrimination against Bengali migrant workers in other states. Though, all adjournment notices were declined.
despite the chair’s attempt to proceed with a Zero Hour mention by nominated member Sudha murty, Opposition members, including those from the TMC and Congress, vociferously protested the decision. Chants of “Vote ki chori band karo” (stop vote theft) filled the air, prompting the Chair to adjourn the proceedings until noon.
Upon the House reconvening for the Question Hour, the disruption continued with Opposition MPs taking to their feet. Sushmita Dev of the TMC was seen in the Well of the House, attempting to raise multiple issues. The persistent din led to a further adjournment until 2 pm.
When the Rajya Sabha reconvened at 2 pm, the Chair attempted to resume the debate on The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025. Though,Opposition MPs remained steadfast in their demand for a debate on the SIR issue and called for its immediate cessation. Amidst the continued uproar and some MPs entering the Well of the House, the Chair ultimately adjourned the proceedings for the day.
