AARP Massachusetts is expanding its efforts to combat financial exploitation through the growth of its fraud-fighting team, the organization of community prevention events and a legislative push to ban cryptocurrency ATMs.
The organization is focusing on the role of cryptocurrency kiosks in facilitating scams, specifically targeting the machines as a primary tool used by fraudsters to steal funds from residents.
Legislative Push for the SCAM Act
AARP Massachusetts has expressed support for legislation designed to curb the misuse of cryptocurrency ATMs. The organization specifically applauded a vote by the Senate Committee on Financial Services to advance a piece of legislation known as An Act to Stop Cryptocurrency ATM Misuse
, or the SCAM Act.
“AARP Massachusetts is pleased that the Senate Committee on Financial Services has reported out An Act to Stop Cryptocurrency ATM Misuse, known as the SCAM Act. This is an important step toward protecting residents from scammers that use cryptocurrencies.”
Jen Benson, State Director, AARP Massachusetts
While the organization has advocated for a total ban on these machines, previous legislative efforts and testimonies from AARP have also focused on tighter regulations. These proposed regulatory measures included the implementation of daily transaction limits, fee caps and increased transparency for users.
Community Outreach and Education
In addition to its legislative activity, AARP Massachusetts is hosting a series of local and virtual events intended to educate the public on fraud prevention. These initiatives are designed to help residents identify red flags and connect with community resources to avoid financial loss.
One such effort included a tele-town hall titled Red Flags & Real Solutions: Protecting Yourself From Fraud
, which focused on providing actionable strategies for consumers to protect their assets from evolving scam tactics.
The Role of Crypto ATMs in Fraud
The push for a ban is driven by reports of residents losing millions of dollars in scams tied to cryptocurrency kiosks. Advocates for the elderly argue that these machines provide a fast, often irreversible way for scammers to move money out of the reach of traditional banking protections.
The organization has highlighted cases where individuals were targeted via deceptive communications, such as fraudulent emails claiming unauthorized charges on accounts, which then led the victims to use crypto ATMs to send money to scammers under the guise of resolving the issue.
