Infant Abandoned by Mother for 8 Days, Found Dead Upon Return

A disturbing incident has come to light in Kaohsiung, where a 4-month-old girl was left home alone for 8 days by her 31-year-old biological mother, surnamed Chen.

According to media reports, Chen, a single mother, had been receiving various forms of assistance from the Social Welfare Centre, including financial aid, baby products, and childcare services. Despite this, she chose to leave her infant daughter unattended for an extended period.

The incident occurred when Chen left her rented house before the Mid-Autumn Festival, leaving her baby girl alone for 8 days. Upon her return on the 23rd, she found her daughter had died of starvation.

The Social Affairs Bureau had classified Chen as a vulnerable family since May last year, providing her with numerous forms of support. However, Chen failed to hand over her baby to a carer before leaving for her trip.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, with preliminary findings suggesting that the infant had been dead for a long time and had not eaten for several days. The police believe that Chen may be guilty of starving her daughter to death, and the case has been changed to a murder investigation.

The Qiaotou District Prosecutor’s Office has questioned Chen, and prosecutors believe that she is strongly suspected of murder. Due to the risk of collaborating with witnesses, destroying evidence, or escaping, Chen’s detention has been approved.

The Social Affairs Bureau has taken Chen’s eldest daughter into care, ensuring her safety and well-being.
